The Golden Prince by 000Fesbra000 The Golden Prince by 000Fesbra000
a small material study I made.
Add a Comment:
This portrait is an incredibly unique approach on a simple material study.

First, the material. Of course the title gives this away, but the material in question is gold. As paintings usually go, gold is a tough look to achieve in either physical paint or digital images as is seen here. Whereas most artists depict gold in a very polished or cartoony fashion with a strongly contrasting deep black and one or two tones of warmer yellow colors, the author of this portrait has managed to depict gold as it is most commonly seen: with a light range of dull but warm yellows and browns, minimal pale highlights, and an overall matte finish. The gold is wonderfully displayed in all of the facets, faces, edges, and crevices of the head and body of the subject.

Now, onto the Prince. The head and neck of the figure show a strong knowledge of the human form and enough insight to reduce and simplify it enough to speak to the golden medium. The angularity, while still reading as very much organic, showcases the metallic surface excellently. Even the protrusions and inscriptions feel deeply natural. Usually, I would feel that the cropping was too tall and should show either more or less of the chest than what is shown here, but the inclusion of the crown-like protrusions balances the portrait expertly and brings a comfortable central focus to the face.

Overall, the piece is a strong study into painting gold and has a unique approach to showcasing the medium. Though clearly an unfinished concept, the idea could go far if it were ever revisited. My final words to the artist would be to keep up the great work and stick with this powerful concept!

You say it's a simple study, but I actually like this piece a lot - the design is very cool and makes you think about the origin of this creature

Intriguing concept.

Makes me think of a background story where a kingdom resides in the princes maze-like mind.
